Auckland Feathers 2024 Year Ahead

Kia Ora Feathers,

It is time to start our new Club Year!

Firstly, I would like to thank you for all for attending the first two key events on the season! These were two firsts for Auckland Feathers.

  • Auckland Feathers in the Rainbow Parade. What a fabulous evening, all I can say is thanks, you were fabulous!

  • Auckland Feathers Pride Cruise. This was an amazing afternoon and will become a highlight each year.

Thank you all for attending, watching, and joining these events.

Now it is time to give you an update as we need to introduce some significant changes to our club.

1) Club Play & Membership

Club Play:

The club has done some serious work and relationship building over the last month. I am very pleased to announce the following.

  • Wednesday Nights Club Play will remain where we will have 12 courts for the first hour, followed by 8 courts for the second hour. Starting from the 27th of March. This means we can increase capacity to 64 Players. From 2025, we will have all 12 courts on Wednesday night so we can further increase capacity.

  • Weekend Club Play. We had two options:

    • Remain on Saturdays inconsistently though the year from 10am-1pm and swapping to Sundays for about 15 weeks a year and limited to 8 courts.

    • Move to Sunday play permanently from 1-4pm. This also gives us the option where we can increase up to 12 courts. During the AGM, it was decided by majority vote that we will move weekend play to Sunday afternoons. We apologise to those this does not work for.

Despite the fact we will paying for courts from the ABA, they have promised to work with us to help secure funding for the club. This will mean we can keep club play costs down without increase to club play this year. We will keep everyone updated when we know more.

Club Membership:

Our proposal is for all members that want to play with us have to join the club as an official member after 3 club plays if you are going to continue playing with us (with special exemptions decided on case-by-case basis).

  • Membership Rate: For this year, this will be a requirement of the club. Membership Rate will be $50 for 2024 at a special low rate this year so we can get more members and show ABA and potential sponsors how big of a club we are.

  • Membership Benefits: Discounted Gillies Ave court hire: Club members are entitled to discount rates on court hire at Gillies Ave. The Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) has different discount rates depending on your membership level.

We have to make this change to membership for two main reasons:

  • Funding: In order to secure funding, we need to know the exact number of members in our club. The more registered members, the more funding we can get.

  • ABA: We are required, as we are a fully affiliated club to the ABA to provide full detail of our membership. This also helps us secure the courts which is one of the issues that has come up over the last few years.

If you are a member of our sister clubs in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and Wellington, we will honour your club membership if you are visiting us.

All current members have to rejoin each year by completing this form:

Badminton Club AGM

Our AGM was held on 16 March 2024, the minutes and the 2023 financial results are published on our website under NEWS. To run Auckland Feathers effectively and smoothly, we need support from you to manage this club. We really urge all of you to step up and help the club. Club nights are easy to run, but in order to get back to an effective running club we need HELP.

Currently, we are missing a Secretary, Treasurer, Social Chair and General Committee members.

For those of you that want to join, please let either Jamie or Steven know or come along to the first meeting of the year on Wednesday 27th March 6pm at the Gillies Avenue Badminton Hall.
